Common questions
What is the difference between a CBC and a CRC?
A Certified Building Contractor (CBC) may build commercial buildings and residential buildings up to three stories. A Certified Residential Contractor (CRC) may build, remodel and repair one-, two- and three-family residences within the statute's height limits. Both are certified by the state and may work anywhere in Florida.
Why are general contractors not listed?
This directory covers building and residential contractor classes only. Certified general contractors (CGC) have a separate licence class that we may add later. You can look them up on DBPR's Verify a License page.
Can I act as my own contractor?
Florida allows owners to build or improve one- and two-family homes for their own use under an owner-builder exemption, with personal on-site supervision and a signed permit disclosure. Selling or leasing within a year after completion creates a presumption that the exemption does not apply. See our guide for details.
What does “board discipline on record” mean?
It means the Construction Industry Licensing Board's published discipline files list at least one final action (or Recovery Fund action) against that licence number since fiscal year 2021-22. We show each entry's date, case number and listed actions exactly as DBPR publishes them. It is a public record, not our opinion.
Why is there no phone number for some contractors?
The state licence file does not include phone numbers. We list the address of record DBPR publishes; contractors who claim their listing can add a phone number and description.
Is this site run by the state?
No. Florida Building & Residential Contractor Check is an independent directory compiled from DBPR's public licence and discipline files. The official lookup is DBPR's Verify a License page at myfloridalicense.com.
